About the artist

Jennifer Grace Askew (b.1989) is an expressive abstract artist based in Greensboro, North Carolina. Working primarily as a painter, she uses acrylic paint from tubes and markers on canvas and wood surfaces where layers overlap and intermingle. Jennifer’s works are multidimensional, strikingly colorful, and intuitive yet structured. They often feature stark diagonals and geometric shapes paired with architectural forms and elements alluding to imaginative landscapes.
For Jennifer, painting is a quest for harmony and balance in which the creative process often feels like a prayer. It is the effort to communicate the core part of the self to the self and others. Her pieces rarely start with a plan, only a feeling or a nudge. A color selection, a stroke of the brush or drag of the marker flows from a deeply felt sense of internal vulnerability and spiritual longing. Often, this can contain a range of emotions from elation and joy to acute grief and even uncertainty. By engaging these emotions with intentionality, Jennifer seeks to invite the viewer into the space of the unseen.
